Teaching decimals can feel intimidating at first, but it doesn't have to be.

Many students already know how to multiply whole numbers, yet they become unsure the moment they see a decimal point. Some students multiply correctly but place the decimal in the wrong spot. Others understand the multiplication but struggle to explain why their answer makes sense.

One strategy you'll see throughout this lesson is the 3 M's:

Move Out → Multiply → Move In

This simple strategy helps students focus on one step at a time while building confidence with decimal multiplication.

So here's how I personally recommend using these resources.

Step 1 — Start with the Full Lesson Video

I created a full YouTube lesson that teaches students how to multiply decimals using the 3 M's strategy.

Students will learn how to:

  • identify the divisor and dividend

  • multiply using the standard algorithm

  • determine correct decimal placement

  • and explain why their answers make sense

Teachers can:

  • play the lesson in class

  • pause during the Checks for Understanding

  • reteach small groups

  • or assign it for extra support at home

The goal of the video is to build confidence before students begin independent practice.

Need a refresher on multiplication first?

I also created a free Math 101: Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers lesson that students can watch before beginning decimal multiplication.

Step 2 — Practice with the Multiplying Decimals Worksheet

After watching the lesson, students move into guided practice using the Multiplying Decimals Worksheet.

This worksheet was intentionally designed to:

  • reinforce the 3 M's strategy

  • strengthen decimal placement

  • build procedural fluency

  • encourage students to show their work

  • and develop mathematical reasoning

An answer key and grading rubric are also included to make grading simple for teachers and tutors.

You can find the worksheet here:

Step 3 — Strengthen Understanding with Error Analysis

One thing I strongly believe is that students learn just as much from mistakes as they do from correct answers.

And honestly... what student doesn't enjoy grading someone else's paper? 😭

That's why I created the Multiplying Decimals Error Analysis Activity.

Instead of simply solving problems, students examine incorrect work using the 3 M's strategy to identify mistakes, explain mathematical reasoning, and correct the solution.

This activity encourages students to think critically about each step of the multiplication process rather than memorizing procedures.

In my experience, students enjoy this activity because the focus shifts from "getting the answer right" to figuring out why an answer is wrong.

Step 4 — Review with Blooket

After completing the lesson and worksheets, students can review with the Mathora Blooket.

The Blooket helps students:

  • practice multiplying decimals

  • reinforce decimal placement

  • review the 3 M's strategy

  • and stay engaged through interactive gameplay

Whether you're using it for whole-class review, small groups, or independent practice, it's a fun way to reinforce the lesson.

Why I Designed This Lesson This Way

I intentionally designed every part of this lesson to work together.

Each resource builds on the previous one:

Instead of teaching students to memorize steps, the goal is to help them understand why those steps work.

When students consistently use the 3 M's—Move Out, Multiply, Move In—they build confidence, improve accuracy, and develop a deeper understanding of decimal multiplication.

I hope these resources make teaching and learning multiplying decimals a little clearer.
