Teaching adding and subtracting decimal word problems can honestly feel overwhelming sometimes — especially when students are all working on different levels at the same time.
Some students still struggle with regrouping. Some students forget to line up decimals. Some students can solve the math but struggle to identify which operation to use in word problems. And honestly? Sometimes teachers are just trying to find resources that actually make sense and work well together.
So here’s how I designed this lesson and how I personally recommend using it.
Step 1 — Start with the Full Lesson Video (Free)
I created a full YouTube lesson walking students through:
how to line up decimals
regroup with decimals
identify operational vocabulary
solve real-world word problems
and determine whether answers make sense
Teachers can:
play the lesson in class
pause during checks for understanding
reteach small groups
or assign it for extra support at home
The goal of the video is to make students feel supported before jumping into independent practice.
Step 2 — Use the Decimal Word Problems Worksheet
After students watch the lesson, they move into guided practice using the Decimal Word Problems Worksheet.
This worksheet was intentionally designed to:
build rigor gradually
reinforce operational vocabulary
encourage students to show work
and help students explain their mathematical reasoning
I also created a completed grading rubric and answer key because one thing I learned as a teacher is that grading math assignments can become overwhelming very quickly.
Step 3 — Reinforce Learning Through Error Analysis
One thing I strongly believe is that students learn a lot from analyzing mistakes.
That is why I created the Decimal Error Analysis Activity.
Instead of simply solving problems correctly, students must:
identify mistakes
explain mathematical reasoning
determine whether answers make sense
and reflect on what should have been done differently
This activity helps students build mathematical reasoning and metacognition — which is simply thinking about their thinking.
✨Honestly, this is one of my favorite activities because my students find joy in grading papers!✨
Step 4 — Review with Blooket (Free)
After completing the lesson and worksheets, students can review using the free Mathora Blooket.
The Blooket allows students to:
practice decimal operations
review operational vocabulary
and stay engaged through interactive gameplay
I also understand that not every classroom has consistent technology access. That is why the Blooket can also be used as independent practice or converted into a printable activity if needed. Click on the photo then click the 3 vertical dots to access the free worksheet.
Why I Designed This Lesson This Way
I created this lesson set intentionally.
Every part connects:
the lesson video
the worksheet
the error analysis
and the Blooket review
The goal is not just to “get through” decimal word problems.
The goal is to help students:
think critically
explain reasoning
build confidence
and actually understand what they are doing
